OnePlus’ new wireless earbuds could be a better competitor to Sony’s WF-C500

If you were impressed by the value of the Nord Buds 2, the upcoming version is expected to be an even more attractive deal.

OnePlus is preparing to launch a new pair of earbuds, called the OnePlus Nord Buds 2r, on July 5. Although the official announcement is scheduled for June 27, leaks have already emerged, indicating that the price of the new earbuds will be significantly lower than their predecessors.

The current street price of the OnePlus Nord Buds 2 is £59, often available for even less (some UK retailers are currently selling them for just £29). This makes them highly cost-effective. However, leaked information suggests that their successors will offer an even better value proposition. While other companies are raising their prices, OnePlus seems to be going in the opposite direction.

According to, the leaked Indian price for the new earbuds is INR2,299, which is approximately £28. It’s worth noting that currency fluctuations and taxes may impact the final price, but it’s evident that these earbuds are expected to be extremely affordable.

OnePlus Nord Buds 2r: Specifications and features

Since the company has only disclosed the available colors for the upcoming Nord Buds 2r as “Deep Gray” and “Triple Blue,” it’s reasonable to assume that there won’t be significant hardware upgrades. The Nord Buds 2r appear to be nearly identical to the current OnePlus Nord Buds.

The Nord Buds 2 have reasonably sized drivers and Bluetooth 5.2. In our review, we discovered that they surprisingly produce good bass and maintain decent audio quality. While they may feel a bit crowded when playing complex music, it’s important to note that achieving audiophile-level clarity at this price range is unlikely. Nevertheless, these earbuds offer excellent performance for their cost, with a respectable battery life of seven hours, extendable to 23 hours with the charging case.

Similar to the previous model, the Nord Buds 2r may not include some of the headline features found in OnePlus phones. This means users of other phone brands won’t benefit from OnePlus Fast Pair or Dolby Atmos support. However, these exclusions might not be deal breakers. Pairing earbuds is typically a straightforward process, and considering the affordability of the headphones, Dolby Atmos is unlikely to provide the same high-quality positional audio as premium headphones like AirPods Max.

The primary competitor for the OnePlus Nord Buds 2r is expected to be Sony’s excellent WF-C500, although the rumored price of the Nord Buds 2r is currently half that of the Sony model. While the Sony earbuds offer better sound quality, their battery life falls short. If the Nord Buds 2r live up to their potential, they could be an exceptional bargain and strong contenders for one of the best earbuds available. More details will be revealed later this week.
