Neuralink, a company owned by Elon Musk, has revealed a video featuring the first person to receive a brain chip from their company. The patient, who is paralyzed from the shoulders down, appears to control a cursor on a laptop screen using only his thoughts. In the video, he plays chess and even turns off the laptop’s music.
The patient, previously unidentified, introduced himself as Noland Arbaugh, aged 29, who became paralyzed after a diving accident. He received the implant in January and can now control a computer mouse with his thoughts, according to Musk’s previous statements.
Musk has stated that the goal of the brain chip is to eventually enable users with disabilities, like the late Stephen Hawking, to communicate more quickly. He also claims it could potentially help treat conditions such as obesity, autism, depression, and schizophrenia.
In the video streamed on Musk’s social media platform X, Arbaugh described the implant procedure as “super easy” and mentioned that he was discharged from the hospital just a day later with no cognitive impairments. He expressed gratitude for regaining the ability to play games like Civilization VI, stating that he played for eight hours straight on the day he regained the ability.
