X has launched a new AI image generator called “Aurora” for Grok. It creates more realistic images than Grok’s previous model, with few limitations on what it can produce. Anyone can try Aurora, but you’ll hit a paywall after a few queries unless you have an X Premium subscription.
The new model can generate images of copyrighted characters and public figures, like Mickey Mouse or a bloodied Donald Trump, but it avoids creating nudes. This is in line with the less restrictive nature of Grok’s earlier image generator.
One example shared by TechCrunch showed AI-generated images of actors Ray Romano and Adam Sandler. They looked realistic at first glance but had some strange issues with anatomy and continuity.
