In a global update from Sony on the PS5 game console, the PlayStation store will now be having a new feature called “Accessibility tags”
which is set to be rolled out this week.
Sony will be collaborating with many developers to bring this feature to live in this week and it is expected that the tag will be shown for a number of first party titles.
According to Sony “Accessibility Tags allow game developers to provide detailed insight on accessibility features supported in their games. As you browse various game hubs on PlayStation Store game hubs on PS5, you’ll see a list of accessibility features by pressing the “Triangle” button if the game you select supports Accessibility Tags. These can range from visual and audio accessibility settings to DualSense controller options, difficulty settings, and online communication features like chat transcription.
Sony announce that there will be six categories with over 50 accessibility tags. This categories includes
1. Visual accessibility features, such as clear text, large text, color alternatives, audio cues and directional audio indicators.
2. Audio features, such as volume controls, mono audio, screen reader and visual cue alternatives.
3. Subtitle and caption options, including subtitle size, clear captions, and large captions.
4. Control options, including button remapping, thumbstick sensitivity, and ability to play without button holds, rapid button presses or motion control.
5. Gameplay options, such as difficulty settings, skippable puzzles, simplified quick time events, and game speed.
6. Online communication options, such as text or voice chat transcription and ping communication.
Sony also made it clear that the following games on PS5 will be supported with Accessibility Tags. This games includes
Days Gone, Death Stranding Director’s Cut, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, God of War, God of War Ragnarök, Gran Turismo 7, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Returnal.
The PS5 console Users Interphase(UI) will now be with a wide array of accessibility settings. This Accessibility Tags
will empower gamers to personalize their PS5 gaming experience according to their individual gameplay needs.
The Accessibility Tags is similar in feature to that which was also implemented by Microsoft on Xbox back in October 2021 and since then Xbox has had more Accessibility features implemented such as “Developers to get feedback from disabled players”.
Sony is hopping to make gaming more accessible, alongside inclusively-designed games from PlayStation Studios and
upcoming products like Project Leonardo. The project Leonardo is accessibility controller that was unveiled by Sony early this year.
