As the release date for the somewhat rebooted Mortal Kombat 1 approaches, developer NetherRealm has unveiled more details about the game. In their latest announcement, they confirmed that Smoke and Rain will be playable characters, alongside several returning characters who will make appearances as assistive Kameos.
Prior to this announcement, NetherRealm had already revealed 10 playable characters for Mortal Kombat 1: Johnny Cage, Kenshi, Kitana, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Mileena, Raiden, Scorpion, Shang Tsung (available via pre-order), and Sub-Zero.
During a recent Kombat Kast livestream, two additional characters were introduced. Smoke, an assassin-turned-cyborg, will be playable for the first time in the main series since the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot. The moody demi-god Rain, who previously appeared as a DLC character in Mortal Kombat 11, will also join the roster.
In addition to the new playable characters, NetherRealm confirmed a number of assist-style Kameo Fighters who will be part of Mortal Kombat 1. These characters include Cyrax, Frost, Scorpion, and Sektor. It’s worth noting that the presence of a second Scorpion and a second Johnny Cage in the Kameo line-up is possible because Kameo fighters are considered “non-canon.”
Mortal Kombat 1 takes place in a “reborn” universe created by the Fire God Liu Kang. The game will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC when it launches on September 19th.
