On August 14, 2023, during the Realme 828 Fanfest event in Shenzhen, China, Realme, a Chinese consumer electronics company, unveiled the world’s fastest battery-charging technology. Dubbed the “320W SuperSonic Charge,” this technology shattered previous records, setting a new benchmark for how quickly we can power up our devices.

To put this into perspective, imagine plugging in your smartphone and watching it jump to 26% battery in just one minute. In less than two minutes, it’s already halfway charged. And before you’ve even had a chance to check your emails, it’s fully powered up in an astounding 4 minutes and 30 seconds. This level of speed was previously unimaginable. The closest competitor was a 300W technology from Redmi, a Xiaomi subsidiary, which could charge a device in just under five minutes. But Realme’s innovation has pushed the boundaries even further.

The secret behind this lightning-fast charging lies in the way power is delivered to the battery. Traditional charging methods work by transferring power to a single battery cell or multiple cells in sequence. But Realme’s technology takes a different approach. It charges multiple battery cells simultaneously, drastically reducing the time it takes to reach full capacity.

During the demonstration, Realme representatives showcased a unique folded battery design. This battery, with a capacity of 4,420 milliampere-hours, was composed of four cells stacked on top of each other. This design not only enabled faster charging but also provided a 10% higher capacity than conventional batteries—a win-win for smartphone users.

But the innovation doesn’t stop there. Realme also introduced a power adapter they’ve aptly named the “Pocket Cannon.” This adapter boasts a power density of 3.3 watts per cubic centimeter, allowing it to deliver an incredible amount of power in a very compact form. While it’s designed to work seamlessly with Realme’s new charging technology, it’s also compatible with other devices, including iPhones equipped with USB-C ports, though they won’t charge quite as quickly.

To give you an idea of the leap in technology, Realme’s previous 240W charger—released just last year—used an adapter with a power density of 2.34 watts per cubic centimeter. That charger could power up a Realme GT Neo 5 smartphone in under 10 minutes, a remarkable feat at the time. But the 320W SuperSonic Charge takes speed to a whole new level.

One of the standout features of the Pocket Cannon adapter is its versatility. It supports multiple fast-charging standards, including UFCS, PD, and SuperVOOC, and features two USB-C ports so you can charge two devices simultaneously. For Realme smartphones, it delivers up to 150W of power, and for compatible laptops, up to 65W.

Of course, with great power comes great responsibility, especially when it comes to safety. Realme’s engineers thought of this too. They introduced the “AirGap” voltage transformer, a technology that ensures high voltages are safely isolated from your smartphone battery during any electrical faults. Using a process known as “contact-free electromagnetic conversion,” this tiny transformer reduces the voltage to 20 volts, protecting battery life while maintaining a 93% power efficiency.

As I reflect on this innovation, I can’t help but marvel at how far we’ve come. The idea that we can now charge a smartphone in under five minutes feels like a glimpse into the future—a future where waiting for your device to charge could become a thing of the past.
